Fares introduced for dial-a-bus services

Derbyshire Gold Card holders who use Community Transport Dial-a-Bus services will have to pay a fare from August.

Dial-a-Bus trips are currently free countywide to Gold Card holders, but from 1 August 2011, a flat rate single fare of £1, or £2 return, is being introduced.

The charge is being brought in because Derbyshire County Council is having to make savings. The council currently pays £240,000 annually to provide this extra benefit. But it can no longer afford it.

A three month public consultation asked local people and groups, including the county’s eight Community Transport schemes, to give their views on plans to make changes to a range of public transport services.

More than 3,000 responses were received, including from Community Transport users, who said they would rather pay a fare than lose the service.

A £1 single fare each way was agreed as a reasonable rate and will contribute  £120,000 worth towards county council savings over the next two years.

Charges for other Community Transport services are not affected.

The half fare, local rail concession for Derbyshire Gold Card holders is also being withdrawn from 1 August. Go to www.derbyshire.gov.uk/goldcard (opens in a new window) to find out more.
